We Can Be Heroes
Submitted by Boys and Schools Blog
We’re very big on Spiderman in our house. Also Buzz Lightyear. And Indiana Jones (whom my son Andy occasionally calls, “Andy-ana”). And Optimus Prime. And a confusing hero of unknown provenance who goes by, “Superbunny.” Heck, even Diego of Go, Diego, Go! fame is a hero of sorts. (He is, after all, always rescuing animals in trouble.) At first, I thought the common thread was the super abilities–the flying, webslinging, transforming into cars, etc. But while they’re a big part of the game, the real appeal of these heroes for my boys is the adventure and the . . . well . . . the “saving” for lack of a better word. We “save” a lot of things around here–imaginary animals, little sisters, small toys in great peril, and so on. Watching them in action, I started to realize that this is just another way that little boys dream their big dreams. I mean, anyone who dreams of being a hero doesn’t exactly suffer from a lack of ambition or motivation. It’s just a matter of focusing those dreams on real life goals as they grow older. And with that said, I’d like to post this week’s new video:
So does your school understand how to reach boys and motivate them? Because the will to succeed is there, even if it can be hard to see.
And on that note, have a great weekend everyone.
