Some Media Images Are Just Not For Kids - or Teens!

Media imagery is powerful. Kids and teens view pictures on line or TV, often put to music, and the result is mesmerizing to them. It is truly hypnotic. Tweens and teens are seeking placement in their peer group and striving to find their identities. For reinforcement and role models, they will seek out media personas who seem to reflect the type of person they think they want to be - or look like. There in lies the danger.
So, as parents, we have to be careful and monitor closely our kids TV and online viewing. If you want.

There is a trend on the video world called “thinspiration” that is far from inspirational - it is down right disturbing and dangerous to our impressionable daughters’ body images and self esteem.
These two stories on MomLogic have started me thinking about we need to find more ways to monitor our kids online and viewing behaviors. We’re not always around our kids when they hit middle school and high school so how in the world can we keep them safe in their media lives? I don’t know the answer yet but I’m going to do some snooping and figure it out. I’ll let you know what I discover. Until then, talk to your kids about these stories and use them as launch pads for discussions about online safety.
